Postdoctoral Researcher in Translational Metabolic and Gastrointestinal Research

University of Gothenburg meets societal challenges with versatile knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.

The Department of Clinical Sciences is one of six departments at the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg. The department conducts research and education that focuses on human health and quality of life. We represent 16 different subject areas and are divided into four sections. Through enriching collaboration with healthcare and Sahlgrenska University Hospital, we have developed joint projects and meeting places that benefit both care and research.

The GastroIntestinal Metabolism Science lab (GIMS) is part of the Department of Surgery at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Sahlgrenska Academy. The research group is led by Professor Ville Wallenius and investigates obesity mechanisms based on the physiology of the small intestine and the mechanisms activated during obesity surgery, primarily the hormonal mechanisms originating from the enteroendocrine cells of the small intestine. The goal is to find new, more effective treatment methods for obesity and its comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes.

Subject

Translational metabolic and gastrointestinal research

Subject Description

The position concerns translational metabolic and gastrointestinal research focusing on the physiology of the small intestine, particularly intestinal ketogenesis and the function and hormone production of enteroendocrine cells. The research includes studies on how different dietary regimens and bariatric surgery affect the intestinal endocrine signaling and its systemic effects on metabolism, inflammation, and liver fibrosis, with particular relevance to obesity and type 2 diabetes. The work is conducted using molecular biological methods, cell and tissue models, and animal experimental systems.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities include conducting translational experimental research focusing on the physiology of the small intestine, particularly intestinal ketogenesis and its significance for the function and hormone production of enteroendocrine cells. The work involves planning, conducting, and analyzing molecular biological experiments in cell and tissue models as well as in animal experimental systems.

The responsibilities also include using modern molecular biological methods such as gene editing (including CRISPR/Cas9-based methods), virus-mediated gene transfer, cell culture, immunohistochemistry, gene and protein analysis, and functional hormone measurements.

The responsibilities also include independently compiling, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data, contributing to manuscript writing and scientific publishing, and actively participating in the research group's joint projects, seminars, and national and international collaborations. The work is carried out in close collaboration with clinical research in bariatric surgery and metabolism.

Eligibility

Eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher is someone who has obtained a doctoral degree, artistic doctoral degree, or has a foreign degree that is deemed equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled no later than at the time the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, preference will be given to those who have obtained their degree no more than three years before the application deadline. Even those who obtained their degree earlier should be considered in the first instance if there are special reasons. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments within trade unions, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or relevant service/assignments for the subject area.

Assessment Criteria

Applicants must have obtained a doctoral degree in molecular biology, biology, physiology, biomedicine, medicine, experimental medical science, or another subject area relevant to the position. Documented laboratory experience and experience with molecular biological methods, such as cell culture, gene and protein analysis, immunohistochemistry, and animal experimental studies are required. Experience in planning, conducting, and analyzing experimental studies as well as scientific publishing in international peer-reviewed journals is highly meritorious.

Furthermore, a very good ability to work independently, collaboration skills, and good communication skills in spoken and written English are required.

In the selection of applicants, the assessment will be based on scientific competence, experience in experimental research, and the ability to independently conduct research in the relevant subject area.
